Umphrey's McGee (Progressive/Rock/Jam Band)
STS9 (Electronica/Rock/Crunk)

Umphrey's McGee & STS9 - Saturday 07.19.2008
Touring heavyweights STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9) and Umphrey's McGee team up for what promises to be one of the hardest-hitting tours of the summer.

This co-bill will feature extended sets by both bands, with Umphrey's McGee to close in Chicago. Not-for-profit Conscious Alliance will host food drives at every stop of this summer's STS9/Umphrey's McGee tour. All patrons donating 10 non-perishable food items or more will receive a limited edition summer tour poster.

The ascension continues for Chicago's Umphrey's McGee, not only in terms of their commercial success but in creative accomplishment and instrumental achievement as well. Throughout a show, UM's invention brings the progressive instrumental chops of Zappa and the stylistic savvy of Steely Dan. It is innovative without being indulgent, exhilarating without losing control, and there are plenty of improv passages that keep the band and their fans off-balance. UM has - since forming in the late '90s in the South Bend, Indiana area cultivated an impressive presence both live and in the studio, quite an accomplishment when considering their humble roots. Cummins, Bayliss, bassist Ryan Stasik and original drummer Mike Mirro all studied at the University of Notre Dame near South Bend, Indiana, while percussionist Andy Farag at the South Bend branch of Indiana University. Cinninger, from Michigan, had a South Bend-based band called Ali Baba's Tahini - as well as an open invitation to join Umphrey's, which he accepted in the Fall of 2000. His addition, along with Kris Myers' arrival in 2003, proved critical to the band's success. Together, the gifted collective elevated its game.

Simply put, the past few years have been nothing short of amazing for STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9). The band released a live concert DVD titled Live As Time Changes, a 1320 Records MIX-TAPE featuring STS9 and a grip of other artists as well as two albums... Artifact & Artifact : Perspectives. All of which were released under their self-owned independent label (1320 Records) to critical acclaim and commercial success including being named in iTunes Best of 2005. On the touring front, ticket sales for the bands undeniably stellar live shows increased dramatically and earned the band a spot on Pollstar Magazines PULSE charts as the number 29 touring artist in the country for their Artifact tour and number 30 for their Perspectives tour while consistantly ranking in the top 50 touring acts in the USA for years. The band has played hundreds of shows including appearances at Austin City Limits Festival, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Winter Music Conference, Vegoose Festival and headlined a sold out Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado returning this year to play TWO nights at the famed venue in front of 12,000 fans. The band also hosted their own festival in North Carolina dubbed RE:Generation bringing over a dozen acts to the sold out weekend.
