An all-night dance party of the first order, NOMO's new album remains true to the band's mission to create raw, propulsive rhythms and infectious melodies. The horns are hot and the percussion is heavy, but the aural magic of NOMO is found in the minimalist-inspired keyboard loops, fuzzed-out bass, soulful group vocals, and rolling blasts from the electric marimba. While NOMO's roots are still firmly planted in the fertile soil of African polyrhythm and American free jazz, it's clear that bandleader Elliot Bergman's bold compositions draw inspiration from cultures and generations wildly different than his own. It's as though Tom Ze, M.I.A., Philip Cohran, P-Funk, and Harry Partch have taken up residency at the NOMO house.
