LTJ Bukem featuring MC Conrad - October 7th, 2006
Once again, BassByThePound has the dynamic duo touching down at Sonotheque, as part of their DYNAMITE! series. LTJ will be dropping the drumnbass gems he's known for the world over with soulful support from his right hand man, The MC Conrad.
LTJ BUKEM grew up studying classical piano and later moved into jazz-fusion. In the mid eighties, at the age of seventeen, Bukem discovered the joys of clubbing. As a keen record buyer the teenager regularly checked out the local soul clubs and legendary rare groove all dayers, and as a result he became interested in the idea of creating his own version of the club soundtrack. In 1990 he got his first big break at Raindance, where he was booked to play between 1:00 and 2:00 a.m. in front of 10,000 people. It was the first true test of his fledgling DJ skills, and he was a huge success. Bukem began to produce more tracks, releasing them on his newly formed label Good Looking Records, and continued to drop them in his DJ sets. The music was a new, jazzy style of drum and bass, soulfully combining rushing breaks, lush ambience, and mellow vibes. He opened up fresh vistas within the increasingly dark ambience of the rave scene. Think radiant, swirling chord progressions surrounded by thunderous bass lines and breakbeats. Bukem is tireless in pushing the boundaries of dance music, and with unprecedented experience comes responsibility. Today he is a figurehead for the RNID (Royal National Institute for the Deaf), testing cutting edge technology to prevent tinnitus while promoting safe listening for both clubbers and DJs.
MC CONRAD's first artistic tool came in the form of a microphone. He became involved with urban street music and its accompanying culture, and began performing with a British hip-hop band. He had always been interested in early electro beats, and it wasn't long before he hooked up with Bukem. Conrad's lyrics bring together thoughts and feelings culled from all aspects of life, organized to complement the music and connect with the listeners. His vocal onslaught is not only intelligent but also caters very well to the party atmosphere, the perfect compliment for Bukem's atmospheric drum and bass. There are many replicas but their partnership has proven to be the definitive drum and bass DJ/MC sound, representing the scene of an independent record label across the globe for more than a decade.
