4th Annual Winter Soulstice - December 17th, 2005
Motherlode w/ Greyhounds
Motherlode was originally formed in the early nineties, as part of a DJ night, at the original Casbah in San Diego. What started out as an underground hang for local hipsters and vinyl junkies, quickly became a collective of young (some too young to drink), punk rock/funk musicians laying down solos to 60's and 70's funk and boogaloo records. Not soon after, Motherlode was formed as the house band, playing live versions of rare, classic soul and funk. Soon, they were packing the club and gaining recognition quickly. The members, at one time or another, included: Robert Walter, Zak Najor, Cheme Gastelum, Chris Stillwell, Printz Board and Brian Jordan.
While Motherlode was short-lived, the respective players have gone on to become integral members and leaders of the Greyboy Allstars, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Black Eyed Peas and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. Now, three of the original members, along with John Scofield Band drummer Adam Deitch, Black Eyed Peas collaborator Chuck Prada and Greyhounds keyboardist Anthony Farrell, have decided to come together as MOTHERLODE. This group is about old friends making new music.

Greyhounds are turning heads by combining raw grooves and fresh melodies with elements of classic funk, oldschool blues, and straightup soul. Not just your average funk band, Greyhounds infuse some much needed levity into the proceedings with a dynamic presence that goes far beyond mere musicianship. They enjoy what they’re doing, and it’s more than evident in their highly energetic shows. As tight breakdowns and relentless vibes ricochet off the walls, both wallflowers and groove connoisseurs alike will find themselves heading towards the floor to get their boogie on.
