Phil Ranelin and Tribe Renaissance - November 20th, 2005 Having collaborated with such contemporaries as Freddie Hubbard and Wes Montgomery early on in his career, Ranelin co-founded Detroit's Tribe Collective (along with Detroit jazz greats like Wendell Harrison, Marcus Belgrave, etc) , a highly influential organization that championed sociopolitical activism and musicianship within the Detroit community. In helping to form Tribe, Ranelin not only influenced numerous musicians locally and globally, he managed to accurately forecast a do-it-yourself ethic among musicians and record labels alike. Through his work in Detroit, he found himself playing alongside such greats as Pharaoh Sanders, James Jamerson and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, not to mention the session recordings he did for Motown Records in the 70s (Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, The Temptations, etc). The spirit of the Tribe Collective manifested itself most strongly in two of Ranelin's releases; The Time Is Now! (1974) and Vibes From The Tribe (1976) both imparted a sense of urgency, idealistic rebellion, and a longing for peace and unity that could only be conveyed through a bass trombone. Reissued in 2000 by Hefty Records, these albums have gone on to a new audience of listeners. These two legendary, critically hailed reissues were later reinterpreted on the Hefty release Phil Ranelin: Remixes (2001), which saw songs from the Ranelin reissues remixed by contemporary artists, all admirers of the Ranelin/Tribe legacy. Remixes included contributions from Prefuse 73, El-P, Morgan Geist (Metro Area), Micha Acher (The Notwist, Tied & Tickled Trio), Kirk DeGiorgio (As One), Jan Jelinek (Farben, Gramm), Slicker, Telefon Tel Aviv, Nobody, and others. Please join us in welcoming these talented musicians to our city.
