Breakestra - September 9, 2005
w/ ISWHAT?!

Ya heard?

The Breakestra... finally. And a hot Friday night it will be when Breakestra takes the stage for the first time ever in Chi-town on September 9. The eight-member crew will be blazing it up with ill breaks from a cadre of live instruments: flute, trumpet, sax-o-phones, stand-up bass, guitar, trombone, and, of course, drums. And no doubt The Abbey will keep it swank and cool with cocktails and a fine fine sound system.

If you don't know, Breakestra is a Los Angeles-based ensemble studying the science of creating synergy between hip-hop and funk, using live instrumentation and vocals as a catalyst. According to an interview with Breakestra's founding father Miles Tackett (bassist, guitarist, upright cellist, and producer) in URB magazine, "...I realize Hip-hop is the only music keeping the funk alive." Funk-fan Tackett was tired of just spinning his favorite records and formed the Breakestra to live out his breakbeat fantasies.

Members of Breakestra include Josh "Wallet" Cohen on drums, Geoff "Double G" Gallegos on sax and flute, Todd Simon and Paul Vargas on trumpet, Dan Osterman on trombone, Carlos Guaico on keys, Davy Chegwidden on percussion, Dan Ubick on guitar, Mixmaster Wolf on vocals and Tackett himself on bass, upright cello and vocals.

So put on your stepping shoes and dress nice and breezy, because this show is going to going to be a breakbeatin', body-rockin', funk-filled extravaganza.

In the tradition of the great virtuoso saxophonist and exploritory percussion duets, ISWHAT?! featuring Jac Walker (tenor sax, alto sax & flute) and Napoleon Maddox (human beatbox & MPC 2000 collages) will play the Abbey Pub on September 9th with BREAKESTRA! Dancing in the footsteps of great pairings like Dewey Redman & Ed Blackwell, Archie Shepp & Max Roach and David Murray & Jack DeJohnette, Walker & Maddox will explore beats and melody with the funk of Hip-hop, the freedom of Jazz and the soulful cry of Gospel. This will be a one of a kind ISWHAT?! set, not to be missed.
