Clyde Stubblefield
Clyde Stubblefield hails from Chattanooga, TN, and is responsible for one of
the most sampled drum beats in the music industry, "Funky Drummer."
Specializing in funk, soul and R & B, Clyde has recorded with such artists
as James Brown, Otis Redding, and Clayton Fillyau. He currently freaks the
funk from Madison, WI.
Leon Spencer
A true rhythm man, funk/soul/jazz keyboardist Leon Spencer gave up the piano
for the organ as soon as he heard Jimmy Smith play live. Originally from
Houston, TX, Spencer exploded on the scene with a powerful ambidexterity
that revolutionized the organ. With his left hand as solid as his right, he
was able to create countermelodies with the bass that redefined the role of
the organ altogether. He has been performing with artists like Melvin
Sparks, Virgil Jones and Grover Washington Jr. since the early 70's.
Melvin Sparks
Born into a musical family in 1946 in Houston, TX, Melvin Sparks taught
himself to play, compose, and arrange music for guitar after only six months
of lessons. He began playing professionally at 16 with a band called the
Midnighters. In 1964, Sparks left school to join the Upsetters, who were
currently backing up big name acts like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The
Supremes and Otis Redding. While on the road with the Upsetters, Sparks
decided to make his home in NYC and pursue other personal endeavors. There
he played with musical geniuses like Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, keyboardist
Lonnie Smith, and alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson. Donaldson quickly became
Sparks' mentor, taking away from the roots of traditional jazz to the lure
of funk and soul. Using a special mix of his background and influences,
Sparks continues to work hard to play music for the people.
JIVE
Formed in August, 1999 in Wallstreet CO, JIVE is a new band putting twists
on old school sounds. With a wide variety of influences including, Bob
Marley, Jerry Garcia, John Coltrane and Led Zeppelin, the JIVE experience
produces soulful grooves backed with serious rhythm. Their unique sound has
landed them gigs with bands like Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and ReBirth
Brass Band, as well as spots at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
Known for their late-night jams and post-parties, JIVE's energy can both
start the party going and end it with a bang.
Ron Levy's Wild Kingdom
Ron Levy, keyboardist from Boston, MA, has his credits on albums ranging
from BB King to Karl Denson, and the variety in his music reflects all of
it. Putting out the first Wild Kingdom album in 1985 with the Fabulous
Thunderbirds and Roomful of Blues, Levy has become a master at pulling
together talented musicians for the sake of the groove. With no end in
sight, Ron Levy's Wild Kingdom is currently performing over 200 times a year
for audiences that like to get down.
